Practice summary

This morning’s review identifies four matters requiring attention across tax, corporate compliance and employment compliance. The information below reflects official publications available through 27 August 2026.

SARS VAT modernisation consultation

SARS released a VAT Modernisation Consultation Paper on 17 August 2026 and invited affected stakeholders to comment on a proposed digital VAT model. The initiative is intended to modernise VAT administration through greater use of data and technology.

Practice relevance: VAT vendors and accounting practices should monitor the consultation and any subsequent implementation notices. Existing VAT201 obligations continue to apply unless SARS formally changes them.

31 August tax deadlines

SARS lists 31 August 2026 as an important date for electronic VAT submissions and payments and provisional tax payments. The first IRP6 return and payment is due for applicable taxpayers whose year of assessment began on 1 March 2026.

  • Confirm that all relevant VAT201 returns are complete and payment references are correct.
  • Review provisional-tax estimates against current management information before filing.
  • Retain calculations and supporting records on the client file.

CIPC beneficial-ownership inspections

CIPC is conducting routine physical or virtual inspections to verify the accuracy and completeness of beneficial-ownership information. Selected entities should expect at least two appointed inspectors, who must present official section 209 inspector certificates.

Directors or members are required to attend personally. Records may include beneficial-ownership filings, securities or beneficial-interest registers, shareholding structures, director registers and supporting identification documents.

Employment Equity developments

The Department of Employment and Labour published a statement on 25 August 2026 concerning the 26th Commission for Employment Equity Annual Report and the continuing progress and challenges in workplace transformation. Designated employers should keep their employment-equity plans, supporting workforce information and annual reporting preparations current.

Internal action list

  • Complete the 31 August VAT and provisional-tax control list.
  • Check that company secretarial files contain current beneficial-ownership and register information.
  • Identify designated employers requiring Employment Equity reporting support.
  • Escalate any missing client records before the relevant filing or inspection date.
